Through no fault of their own some families of our school children have fallen on hard times and simply don’t have the financial resources to provide adequate food, shelter and clothing, much less the extras like paper or pencils. If one of these children has a special talent for music, sports, or something else, there is little hope of nurturing that talent. The Foundation is committed to assuring that all students have equal access to opportunities in school.

The Foundation – through its donors – makes investments in the future of the lives of its students and in the community as a whole. Through your gift to the Steps to Success campaign you can bring hope to our children and their families. You have the power to make sure every child in our district has what he or she needs to learn and build a bright future.

We invite you to participate in the financial support of the Steps to Success campaign to assure that students in the North Thurston Public Schools have the assistance they need for a successful school career. Several opportunities are available and your investment in the community and our children’s future can also provide substantial tax and income benefits for you.

There are many ways that donors can support the mission of the North Thurston Education Foundation. Here are a few ways you can improve the academic performance of the students in our community:

Cash
Cash is the most common Campaign gift and may be pledged over a three year period. A pledge often enables you, as a donor, to contribute a larger gift when it is spread over a longer period of time.

Stocks and Bonds
Stocks, bonds and other forms of securities that have appreciated in value are the next most common form of gift. The tax advantages to the individual donor make them highly attractive. Money market funds also make excellent gifts.

Real Estate
A gift of real estate is another convenient way to contribute to the Campaign. If you are considering the sale of real estate, but may be hesitant because of the potential impact of capital gains taxes, you may derive substantial benefits by transferring the property to the North Thurston Education Foundation.

Life Insurance
Life insurance may provide an easy way to make a substantial gift. You may be one of the fortunate people whose life insurance policy has outlived its original purpose. A policy can be assigned to the North Thurston Education Foundation whether it is paid up, partially paid up, or is a new policy.

Gifts Through your Will
While current gifts are needed, you are not limited to this form of giving. By making bequests to North Thurston Education Foundation in your will you can help ensure a future for students in North Thurston schools. Or, you may consider leaving your assets in a trust, assigning the income to one or more beneficiaries and the trust principal to North Thurston Education Foundation.

Other Forms of Giving
These include life income plans, trusts and commemorative or memorial gifts. There are a variety of plans that can bring immediate benefits to you. We urge you to consult your own legal or financial counsel, or perhaps a member of our Campaign committee, to determine what options might be available to you. You will be able to receive the maximum benefit consistent with your personal objectives, while at the same time supporting the North Thurston Education Foundation.

The Foundation’s goal for the campaign is to ensure funds are available to provide student assistance grants to meet emergency needs that will improve a student’s chance of success. However, we realize many might believe scholarships and learning improvement grants are a higher priority and would prefer their gifts benefit those programs. We encourage you to make a gift designated to your top priority.

Please view these charts to see how your gift will make a difference:

All gifts to the Steps to Success Campaign are greatly appreciated and will be acknowledged in future newsletters, publicity, in signage in the North Thurston Public Schools’ district office and in schools throughout the district.

“We don’t have any food at home,” Amy, a pre-teen girl told her counselor. “What did you have for dinner last night?” “A can of potatoes.” Immediately the counselor called the girl’s mother for permission to take her grocery shopping after school. She drew $40 from the Foundation’s fund at the school, and off they went. Amy shopped carefully. She balanced the cost of bread (two loaves) vs. apples (two), and realized she could make the money go farther with bread. She was able to spend that $40 with such thrift that she purchased enough food to last the family the rest of the week. What a math lesson, as well.

There are over 250 homeless school-age children in our community who face similar challenges every day.

What a little thing $40 is in most of our lives. Yet what an impact this small gift had on Amy’s family. It gave them more than sustenance. It gave them hope that the future could be better. And, most important, it gave this student the nourishment she needed to continue to learn and build her future.

David was a fifth grader who always dreamed of playing the violin. He lived with his family at a campground. They were trying to find an affordable place to live while, at the same time, juggling the need for food, clothing and school supplies.

The district provided information to the family on how they could connect with the resources they needed to get on their feet.

David’s mom was so grateful for everything the community had done, but there was one more question she had concerning her son.  He had always wanted to play the violin and be in the school orchestra, but there was not enough money to rent an instrument.

The Foundation stepped in and provided the funds to rent a violin for this young man. The Foundation is committed to assuring that all students have equal access to opportunities in school, and this was a perfect way to make that happen for David. David became an enthusiastic learner who practiced regularly. His dream was fulfilled, and his horizons were expanded through the support of the Foundation.
